BioBlitz
The Foundation is BioBlitz Central for this key citizen science program. Staged as a one or two day event within a natural area; children, students, and adults work alongside professional naturalists, wildlife managers, and research scientists to observe and record as many of the native flora, fauna, and fungi as possible.
Science & Education.
The strength of our education program lies in our access to top scientific minds. When we lay out ecological information on the web, we don't need to refer to a textbook; rather, we consult with the people -- often Ed Wilson himself -- responsible for the research in question. As our major universities attest, the best in education comes from mixing teaching with research. The Foundation will apply the same model to its education programs. But the traffic is not just one way: scientists benefit in turn from the freshness of perspective and enquiring minds of their students. Our experience with BioBlitz reveals these events, whose purpose is primarily educational, often provide scientists with unexpected opportunities. For example, a specialist in a group of flies may find themselves along side a specialist in a group of plants critical to those flies: a collaboration is born. Citizen science itself is a bridge between the worlds of science and education. BioBlitzes will provide educational experiences for participants and data for interested scientists. Ultimately, the BioBlitzes, by seeding biological interests in young people, will yield scientists.
